Lowndesy’s Look: Sydney SuperNight 300 Saturday

Saturday Wrap

A race under lights in Australia has been a long time coming since Lowndesy won the last one held here in Sydney over 20 years ago and, for a while during tonight’s 300km race, it looked like we would see a repeat. Unfortunately though, agressive strategy from the blokes in red next door and a late-race safety car meant that wasn’t to be, but the Autobarn Lowndes Racing Team couldn’t be happier with the end result.

Practice 2: 11th (Fastest Lap: 1:29.4344)
Qualifying: Ninth (Fastest Lap:1:28.5306)
Race: Fourth
Championship: Fourth (2,061 points)

“The first race under lights for a while was really exciting. It’s taken a while to get a race under lights again and I’m a big fan of it. Seeing the support of the fans tonight, I think it’s a positive move forward. We had a reasonable start in the race, we had a great battle with Dave Reynolds at the beginning, we were bashing doors and doing all sorts of things and trying to find a bit of space. But as the race unfolded, our car was really good. With the cool conditions we looked after our tyres really well. We had a good, speedy car! We found ourselves leading the race in the second stint, but the safety car didn’t quite help us. In the end, with fresher tyres, Shane (van Gisbergen) and Jamie (Whincup) were always going to be hard to beat, but it would have been nice to be on the podium. In the end, we just struggled to turn left. I think it might have hurt the front right tyre, but all in all, to finish fourth from starting ninth did show that we had good pace, good tyre life and all three Triple Eight cars really responded well after qualifying, so positive signs.”
