Lowndesy’s Look: Gold Coast 600 Saturday

Saturday Wrap

After a qualifying session that was nothing short of deflating (to put it politely) the Autobarn Lowndes Racing crew put their heads down and reminded themselves how to work as a team and the importance of communication. In short, that’s how Lowndesy and Richo soared up the pack from 21st to a magnificent second, helped by faultless drives and of course a well-timed safety car.

Qualifying: 16th* (Fastest Lap: 1:10.8566) *Started 21st due to five-place grid penalty
Top Ten Shootout: N/A
Race: Second

“It was disappointing after qualifying, we knew the car was much better than where I put it. That’s motor racing, especially around a street circuit like this, it’s always difficult to get out of people’s way. We got a great start, the main aim was to try and maximise the first stint, driving around with the co-drivers, to get as far up as we could. Richo (Steven Richards) obviously jumped in for his stint, then my last stint was really good. The car was nice to drive, it looked after its tyres. We had a great battle there with James Courtney. We had better drive off the corners, just couldn’t quite match him through the chicanes. Once we got a run on him out of turn four, we were able to overlap and from then on we basically looked after the car to bring it home in second. It was a wonderful day!”

Steven Richards

“Watching Craig (Lowndes) in the first stint was a bit inspiring for me, it put a bit of pressure on to do a good job and we popped out in a good position. The driver change was pretty tight because we had to do it in the fuel time, but it was pretty good, we didn’t lose any track position from that. I just saved fuel for the whole stint. The strategy worked out perfectly. The safety car could not have come at a more opportune time for us. Overall, I think that everyone in the Autobarn Lowndes Racing team will be pretty proud of today. They played everything right after a troubled qualifying, but there was definitely redemption in the result, for sure.”
